Support "required" input values

The idea here is to (optionally) require the user to enter certain pieces of information (e.g. experimenter name, subject name) before starting an experiment.
Maybe validate the values of certain variables and confirm
they're not empty? The list of variables to validate could be
stored in setup_variables.xml, so that they could be
required for all experiments run on a given setup.
